Thursday, September 3, 2009 - Growing, but worrying

The next weigh-in is due and Nico stands (well, lays) at 6 lbs 6 oz. and 19 inches, so he has gained a whopping 13.5 ounces and one inch, so he is still growing and gaining weight (and quite a bit actually), but we are getting more and more worried about him being very hungry and drinking all of his milk, but then shortly after spitting up or even vomiting good parts of it again, because we are afraid that he does not get enough nutrition to develop properly! Obviously the weight gain kind of proves that wrong, but still, the worry stays, also because it could be a sign for something else as well...

Saturday, August 30, 2009 - Maman is getting better

While Nico continues to be himself and doesn't seem to have too big of a problem getting adjusted to the basement, Maman is also finally doing better after the big C-section. While she still has to be careful, she can move a lot more every day and is feeling more complete now that she can take care of Nico more, especially with me being back at work (obviously not today)! :)

Friday, August 29, 2009 - Still regurgitating

Nico is still regurgitating a lot after having his bottle, so we are wondering, if he might be allergic to milk or have any other internal problem that prevents him from accepting and then properly digesting his milk.

Other than that he is a happy baby, sleeping a lot, but when he is awake, he is moving a lot, it is almost as if he gathered enough energy while still being in Maman and now he is letting it out, haha.

Thursday, August 28, 2009 - Big sucker

Nico has a healthy appetite and sleeps fairly well, but he sucks on almost anything he can get, gums are hard, we have the suspicion that he might be starting to teethe soon. Everybody keeps saying that it is early, but hey, some babies are actually born with teeth... Unfortunately there is nothing we can do against it...

Tuesday, August 26, 2009 - First doctor check-up

The one week check-up at our doctor is due today and we already dread both how long it might take to get in and what he might say in the light of Nico’s regurgitation and restlessness. So it takes us even longer than the anticipated time to see the Doc, but then the check-up at least does not produce anything out of the ordinary, so all is good. Of course as part of this, Nico also gets weighed and he clocks in at 5 lbs. 8 ½ oz. and 18 ½ inches, so he is growing very nicely, especially as most babies lose weight during their first few weeks, so he’s swimming against the stream already!

Monday, August 25, 2009 - First chiro visit

Nico gets very agitated again, and will not calm down, only after 20-25 minutes he falls asleep, we are not sure if he just calms down or because he is exhausted. It hurts us so much, because we have no way of knowing what the problem is, as he obviously can’t let us know and it breaks our heart to see him writhe and cry.

Later he also regurgitates a lot of formula, which exhausts him even more and we are worried about his food intake. Other than that we are steadily increasing the amount of formula we give him based on the recommendations we received at the hospital and at least for the drinking part Nico seems to be ok with it, as he is drinking it all and fairly quickly, too.

We are slowly finding a rhythm and get used to which order it is best to do things, as both us and him are learning. He also sees our chiro for the first time ever and is one of the youngest patients she’s ever had to be adjusted. She mentions that in the back he already has muscles that a baby his age should not have yet, yep, he’s an early one, LOL.

Sunday, August 24, 2009 - Adjusting to home

Overall it is a harsh nighttime for Nico as well and we guess that it probably is gas related, but who is to know... The new bottle works well, as there is some small flow of its own, so he does not have to strain to get it out, which helps him a LOT to get used to things. One big difference also is the different temperature, as it had been so hot at the hospital and now he has to get used to the far lower temperature at home in our basement, so we have to really bundle him up and make sure that he can keep his heat, because we definitely don’t want him to go blue again.

Val is still having a very hard time with the aftermath of her surgery, so everything takes a lot longer, getting up, laying down, moving overall, so I am stepping up and try to help whenever and wherever I can. I am so happy that I was able to get the time off from work, because we had not anticipated things to be that difficult and as frustrated as mommy is, I am trying my best to help her take care of everything, which works surprisingly well, even more so as we are both sleep depraved.
